Last updated 24 October 2026. This notice explains what personal data SIMLAF collects, why, and what you can do about it. We collect as little as we can.
1. Who is responsible
SIMLAF is responsible for the personal data described here. Contact us about privacy at hello@simlaf.com.
2. What we collect and why
Email sign-ups
When you ask for SIMLAF Spectral Free, sign up for the weekly SIMLAF Academy lesson, or ask to be told when a product is released, we collect your email address, the list you signed up to and the time you signed up. We use it only to send what you asked for. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes you from that list.
Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Purchases
Purchases are processed by our reseller, the merchant of record, which collects your payment details and billing information under its own privacy notice, shown at checkout. The reseller passes us what we need to issue and support your licence: your name, email address, country, the products you bought and the order reference. We never receive your full card details.
Legal basis: performing our contract with you, and our legal obligations.
Signing in
Sign in, at the top of every page, takes you to our reseller’s customer portal, where you can see your orders and licence keys. Signing in happens there, under the reseller’s own privacy notice. This website has no user accounts, sets no login cookies and never receives your password.
Licence activation
Activating a licence connects to our licence service once per computer. It sends your licence details and an identifier for that computer, so that activations can be counted against the 3-computer limit. After activation the software does not need to connect again.
Legal basis: performing our contract with you.
Support
If you write to us, we keep your message and our reply so we can help you, and so we have the history if you write again.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you, and performing our contract where it concerns a purchase.
Our community on Discord
The SIMLAF Room is a server on Discord, for people aged 16 and over. If you join, Discord processes your account and your messages under its own terms and privacy policy. Within the server we see your Discord name and what you post there, and moderators may remove posts or members that break the server’s rules. If a moderator acts on a rule break, we keep a short record (the Discord user ID, links to the messages and screenshots) so we can handle repeat problems and reports. If you ask for the Customer role, you email us from the address you bought with and we check it against our order records. That email is kept as a support message (see Support, above); in Discord we keep only the role. We never ask for your licence key, password or payment details there. This website does not embed Discord and sends it nothing; the join link simply takes you to Discord.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a safe, useful community that you chose to join.
This website
This website uses no cookies and no advertising trackers. It counts visits without cookies, as described under Visit statistics below. It also loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so when you visit, Google receives your IP address and basic browser information, as described in Google’s own privacy policy. Our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs (such as IP address, page requested and time) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a working, secure website.
Visit statistics
We count visits with Umami, a cookie-free analytics service, so we can see which pages help people, which countries they come from and which links bring them here. For each page you view it records the page address (keeping campaign tags such as utm_source and dropping everything else after the question mark), the site you came from, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language, and your approximate location (country, region and city), worked out from your IP address. It also records a few button presses, such as turning on a clip’s sound, starting or finishing the listening test, or signing up, but never anything you type.
Umami does not store your IP address with these statistics. It links the pages you view within one calendar month under a pseudonymous code made from your IP address and browser; the code changes at the start of each month, so visits in different months are not linked. It does not follow you onto other websites, and we never try to find out who you are. Umami sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. The statistics are stored in Umami’s EU data region.
To object, use the button below: this browser will not be counted on this website again, and it keeps one setting on your device to remember your choice. Browsers that send Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control are never counted.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding, in totals, how this website is used, so we can improve it. You can object at any time with the button above.
3. Who we share it with
We share personal data only with the service providers who help us do the things above, and only what each one needs:
- our reseller, the merchant of record, for orders, payments, tax and refunds;
- our email service, to send sign-up emails;
- our licence service, to activate licences;
- our website host, to serve this website;
- Umami (Umami Software, Inc.), our cookie-free analytics service, to count visits.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.
4. International transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries other than yours. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards the law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.
5. How long we keep it
- Sign-up emails: until you unsubscribe.
- Purchase and licence records: for as long as your licence is in use, and afterwards for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
- Support messages: for as long as they are useful for helping you, after which we delete them.
- Community moderation records: up to 12 months after the last incident they concern.
- Visit statistics: kept by Umami for the retention period of our plan, currently 6 months; after that we keep only daily totals, which identify no one.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us to give you a copy of your personal data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or send it to another service. You can withdraw consent at any time. Write to hello@simlaf.com and we will respond within the time the law allows. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
7. Children
Our website and products are not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
8. Security
We use providers that protect data in transit and at rest, keep access to personal data to the people who need it, and collect as little as possible in the first place.
9. Changes
If we change how we use personal data, we will update this notice and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell the people it affects.
